The oil filter base (located on the forward left side of the block) features two ports and four bolt holes. A base gasket must be used for sealing between the adapter and the block. This gasket bwas included in our Victor gasket set.The gasket will only align in one orientation. If holes are misaligned, you have the gasket in the wrong position. I applied a thin film of Permatex The Right Stuff RTV to the block side of the gasket prior to installation.

The 427 FE side oiler block allows the use of either an adapter than accepts a direct spin-on oil filter, or a remote base filter adapter, allowing remote-mounting of the filter. The remote base of shown here. This adapter features two 1/2″ NPT ports and one 1/8″ NPT port. The 1/2″ ports accept hose fittings, while the 1/8″ NPT port provides a convenient location for the oil pressure sender line.

EngineQuest® (EQ®), a leading supplier of stock and performance cylinder heads and internal engine parts, has now developed a new oil filter adapter with an internal hex design for the 2003-2008 Dodge 5.7 liter Hemi.  The newly designed oil filter adapter allows the use of an Allen wrench which greatly reduces the potential for damage, and the time and labor required to install or uninstall this adapter. This design innovation by EQ marks the beginning of a complete conversion of the company’s entire line of threaded adapters to the more practical hex design. The hex designed Dodge Hemi adapters (part# OFA345) are available now.

 

“Time is money,” says Mark Moore, EQ’s Director of Sales. “This was an obvious design change for this part.  I’m sure engine builders will appreciate the ease of accomplishing this task using an Allen wrench instead of traditional methods as it saves time without damaging the adapter. The complete conversion of our threaded oil filter adapter line is now underway.”

 

EQ also offers engine builders a large selection of OE fit oil filter adapters for AMC/Jeep, Chevrolet (small block), and Ford engines, and has recently introduced oil filter adapters for current AMC 304/360/401 liter engines (part # OFA304).

For you “Stang freaks out there, this is cool news from Edelbrock. The clever boys in Torrance, California have announced the arrival of their E-Force Supercharger system for 2005-09 Ford Mustang GT. This all-new design is engineered and manufactured by Edelbrock and features an Eaton® Twin Vortices Series (TVS®) GEN VI rotor assembly – the same internals used on the new Corvette ZR-1. The ultra-low restriction design has 15″ long runners for maximum torque, an integrated bypass valve for reduced parasitic loss, and a high capacity 110 square inch air-to-water intercooler. This combination improves a 2005-2009 Mustang GT to an impressive 466 horsepower and 439 ft./lbs. of torque, with only five (5) pounds of boost, producing more power per psi than any Mustang supercharger system on the market today.

Now shipping, Edelbrock offers two packages; a complete 50-state legal kit (#1580) designed to bolt-on and produce 466 horsepower and 439 foot pounds of torque at five pounds of boost pressure and an off-road use competition kit (#1585) designed for purpose built applications requiring additional boost pressure and custom calibration.

This complete kit (#1580) includes everything you need to install the E-Force supercharger on 2005-2009 Mustang GT’s, including supercharger/manifold assembly, air inlet with 85mm throttle body, fuel injectors, air-to-water intercooler, spark plugs, coil covers and handheld flash programmer to properly tune the factory ECU for the added power. Diamond’s modeling kit provides all materials needed to make your own custom chamber model. This allows Diamond to design and make custom-dome pistons to precisely fit your custom head chambers.

 

 

Diamond Pistons has introduced its combustion chamber mold kit, the first such complete checking device to ever appear in the automotive aftermarket. While making an impression of the cylinder head combustion chamber is well-known, Diamond provides a break-through by including all the materials needed in a single package.

 

 When cylinder head combustion chambers are modified and dome pistons are required, an accurate mold reflecting the inverse image of the combustion chamber is necessary. By pouring an epoxy mold, all the necessary data the piston maker requires will be captured, except the depth of the valve pockets. The data includes valve center lines, the valve positioning in relationship to the cylinder, the angle of the valves, and an accurate chamber footprint from which the dome can be formed.

Using your mold, Diamond scans the sample and inputs the profile data into their computer system.

 

Thickness of the head gasket is another critical consideration. The thicker the gasket, the greater the volume of the combustion chamber will be. From the mold shape, a piston can be designed with the perfect crown profile. Also, the mold kit can be used to calculate the compression ratio as well as cubic centimeter (cc) capacity of the combustion chamber. With regard to valve pocket depth, if the engine builder is unsure as to how far the valves will travel toward the piston, Diamond will provide them a sample piston with estimated valve pockets incorporated. They in turn can fit the sample piston to the engine and advise Diamond of any adjustments necessary.

Diamond engineers create a 3-D CAD profile and are then able to “tweak” the design according to the builder’s needs.

 

 

A mold is produced by fixing a fully assembled cylinder head (with a substitute spark plug in place) on an empty block (without head gasket), turning it upside-down, and applying WD-40, a light coat of oil, or silicone spray to the cylinder bore. Mix the two epoxy mediums in a 1:1 ratio for 2-3 minutes, pour the mixture in from the bottom of the bore in an amount at least 0.150-inches up the cylinder wall, and let cure for 30 minutes. If the heads are canted valve type, before removing the chamber mold from the head, install the dowel pins, set a straight edge against them, and scribe a parallel line on the back side of the mold, as shown in the instructions supplied. Ship the mold to Diamond in the container provided with the kit.                    

 

Diamond scrutinizes the customer’s mold with a 3D laser scanner to determine the dimensions needed to develop the most advantageous dome configuration. In some cases, engine  builders require the piston dome to fill as much of the combustion chamber as possible while others only want to fill as much of the chamber as needed to achieve a pre-determined static compression ratio. This new Diamond Chamber Mold kit, which costs $42, achieves it all.

Stromberg Carburetor is proud to announce the first World Land Speed Record powered by New Stromberg 97 carburetors. Congratulations to Bobby Green and the Old Crow Speed Shop crew from Burbank, CA for shattering their 104mph 2008 V4/FS record with a new 127.270 mph pass at Bonneville’s Speed Week in August with their belly-tank streamliner.

 

The traditional belly tank streamliner has been a Bonneville favorite since Bill Burke fixed a war-surplus aircraft drop tank onto an early Ford chassis back in 1946. The natural streamline shape of the tanks, used during the war to hold extra fuel on aircraft which could then be jettisoned or “dropped”, was the perfect ready-made streamlined race car body. The Old Crow Team was put together specifically to maintain this tradition.

 

In the FS (Fuel Streamline) class, the design of the body is restricted only to the extent that at least two wheels must be covered. The V4 engine class is for Vintage (pre-1935) 4-cylinder engines.

 

Says Stromberg owner Clive Pew, “I met the Old Crow guys with heads in hands on Monday as they couldn’t get enough fuel into the very hot H&H Antique prepared 4-banger with the two old Stromberg 48s they had. I had New 97s with me, so three went onto the engine’s hand-build plenum-equipped intake. They needed to make up a riser for the center carb to avoid fouling on the magneto, but a sheet of plywood from another team was pressed into action. Real Salt Flats ingenuity in action.”
With little time to tune, Bobby smashed his own 2008 record with a 127.270 mph pass, backed up on Wednesday. A new V4F/FS record and the first New genuine Stromberg 97-powered world Land Speed record!  

 

Said Bobby Green, “The Old Crow team was all talking about what great quality the new Stromberg 97s are. They don’t leak. They don’t even weep. And they did the job pretty much straight out of the box. Thanks for the help and nice work.”

I recently spent a few hours trying to clean my office, and came across an old photo that sparked some humorous memories.

Once upon a time (back in 1979), I had the opportunity to “co-drive” in the Baja 1000 desert off-road race, from Ensenada to LaPaz, on the Baja peninsula in northwestern Mexico. To make a long story short, we only ran about 7 miles before the car dropped and the team gave up.
