EDELBROCK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

Vic Edelbrock, President and CEO of the Edelbrock Corporation, recently awarded the Vic Edelbrock Sr. Memorial Scholarship award at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now in its fifth year, this scholarship is endowed by Vic Edelbrock and the Edelbrock Corporation in support of continued automotive education through the WTI Foundation and WyoTech. This scholarship is based on an essay submission and is awarded annually to a WyoTech student who exemplifies hard work, dedication to the automotive industry and outstanding citizenship. The 2008 recipient of this five-thousand five-hundred dollar scholarship award is Barry Derheim of Sioux Falls, IA.

Barry Derheim is proof positive that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. At thirty-seven years of age, Barry is the most senior recipient of this scholarship and his story is one of experience and persistence. Barry’s automotive passion began at adolescence and continued through high school. After high school Barry chose to serve our country in the US Navy where he specialized in quality assurance as a weld inspector. Following his military service, Barry realized that one thing he really missed was his passion for everything automotive. This was the point that Barry set his personal goal to one-day open a resto-mod specialty business catering to the muscle car and street rod customer. After a serious focus on working to raise the capital to pay for his education, Barry chose WyoTech as the cultural and educational institution to learn the skills required to be a serious professional and business owner. Barry has completed WyoTech’s applied service management program, is finishing the collision refinishing program and will take on the high performance engine curriculum beginning in January, 2009. Upon completion Barry will graduate with his Associates degree in Specialized Tech.

“Barry is an outstanding young man” states Vic Edelbrock. “My father would be proud of how far this industry has come through continued education – and that’s what this scholarship is all about. We still need to work at the local high school and vocational level as the shop programs are always underfunded and have been unjustly sacrificed. We are very fortunate to have a resource in WyoTech as a place where people like Barry can go to learn the skills to realize a dream in an automotive career”. When asked about his initial reaction upon learning he had won the scholarship, Barry stated: “It’s a huge honor to be recognized by Edelbrock and WyoTech. Beyond the monetary value, this scholarship is symbolic of the hard work that is finally paying off”.

GALES BANKS CHOSEN FOR HALL OF FAME CITATION

The Automotive Hall of Fame, the highest place of honor in the International Motor Vehicle Industry, has selected Gale Banks to receive one of their 2009 Distinguished Service Citations.

He will accept the award at the annual Automotive Hall of Fame luncheon on January 25, 2009 in New Orleans. This national citation is Hall of Fame’s oldest ongoing recognition and is presented each year to individuals who’ve had a significant impact on the automotive industry.

Banks is one of only five industry executives being accorded this high honor for 2009. Banks, who this year celebrates his “first 50 years” in the business, was quite surprised by the selection. “I sure hadn’t seen this coming. When the letter informing us that I’d been selected hit my desk, I actually had to read it over a couple of times before it sunk in,” he explained. “I was just blown away and humbled by the names of the others who’ve been honored with this citation over the years. It’s a rare day when I’m struck almost speechless,” he added. ” … But this was surely one of them!”

Banks’ name now joins a select group that includes the likes of Charles Kettering, Harvey Firestone, Ed Cole, Roger Penske, Leo Goosen, William France, Lee Iacocca, A.J. Foyt, William Petersen, Carroll Shelby, Brooks Stevens, J.D. Power, Leo Mehl, Robert Lutz, Leon Mandel, Ralph DePalma, Keith Crain, Charles Blum, and Jim Press. The full list of honorees for this prestigious award is both long and impressive, and goes all the way back to Ransom E. Olds in 1940.

Banks went on to thank both the Board of Directors of the Automotive Hall of Fame and the Distinguished Service Citation committee. He also personally thanked his many colleagues who wrote compelling letters of support for his acceptance. “There are a number of people who put their names and thoughts about me down on paper and sent them to the Hall,” said Banks. “They are the truest of true friends, they know who they are, how much I appreciate it, and how much I thank them all for those kind words.”

Notice of the Hall of Fame’s award comes directly on the heels of word that the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum will honor Banks’ company on its “first” half- century in the automotive business with a special exhibit opening to the public on December 3, 2008 in Pomona, California.

NEW HIGH TECH RING TESTING

Hastings Manufacturing Company, LLC announces upgrades to its design and verification capabilities through the acquisition of new AVL EXCITE simulation software and Land & Sea DYNOmite dynamometers. The new systems will allow Hastings to more accurately design and test piston rings for a broader range of applications, including small to large bore, and high performance engines.

AVL’s EXCITE, a vibration and acoustic analysis tool, was chosen by Hastings because the majority of OEM engine manufacturers use it as their main platform for testing strength and durability, and for conducting NVH simulations. It will be used to aid in the design of piston rings by simulating the impact of varying design parameters on engine performance. Interpreting the results is key to the analysis, which is another reason Hastings chose AVL, as their engineering and technical support are the best in the business. “The AVL software allows us the ability to quickly test our theories and design modifications, and then apply them in a real-time test on the Land and Sea dyno’s, thus quantifying our findings,” says Don Wiser, Process Engineer, Prototype Coordinator at Hastings.

To test piston rings that are ready for production, Hastings chose Land & Sea’s “Pro” Docking Station and Kart dynamometers, and their sophisticated data acquisition electronics with DYNO-MAX 2000TM software. The “Pro” Docking Station will load most high performance engines at any throttle setting or rpm, able to test them from 1 to over 10,000 hp. The DYNOmite computer automatically records true hp, torque, rpm, elapsed time, etc., at up to 1,000 readings per second, and can apply inertia compensation and SAE environmental correction factors. The DYNO-MAX 2000TM software creates a full engine dynamometer lab on the computer with analog and digital displays. With these new test beds, Hastings can accurately demonstrate and record how their rings will perform in their customer’s engines at a full range of loadings and correction factors.

DEI ACQUIRES NY-TREX NITROUS

Design Engineering, Inc. recently acquired Ny-Trex, LLC a nitrous oxide company founded in 2003.  Ny-Trex offers a complete line of nitrous oxide kits and components utilizing 21st century engineering.

“The fit between Ny-Trex and Design Engineering could not be ignored, even in the middle of a recession. Here is a company that has a truly innovative product line that could really enhance our offering through our fantastic network of warehouses and dealers”, stated David Markley, Design Engineering, Inc. President. Ny-Trex founder Ken Brahier has agreed to stay on as Ny-Trex Division Vice President where he will have the ability to see his vision realized. Markley commented, “We are truly fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Ken. In the time we spent together on this deal it became obvious that he is brilliant at applying engineering from an ‘end user’ point of view”.

“The main performance difference of a Ny-Trex system versus other nitrous systems is predictability and reliability of their proprietary solenoid vales.  Ny-Trex valves range from the highest flow on the market to a multiport valve to the Triple Threat set-up which provides separate valves for fuel, N2O and purge all in one high-tech machined distribution hub which is an exclusive Ny-Trex product” stated Brahier.

Markley added, “…With our manufacturing capabilities, strong network of performance distributors and dealers, and focused marketing team the sky is the limit for the Ny-Trex brand.  Brahier is currently designing new and innovative next-generation products not just for the Ny-Trex line but DEI’s CryO2TM cryogenic air intake system.”

The formal unveiling of the Ny-Trex acquisition took place at the Performance Racing Industry show in Orlando, FL on December 11-13, 2008 at the Design Engineering booth.
